What have we been doing to our planet? Watch the video in the link below:

Disposable Island - ABC News

The image below shows where the Great Pacific Garbage Patch being researched is located. Click on the image to make it larger so that you can see where the patch is in the ocean.

You can review as much as you want about the Garbage Patch on this website which provides a timeline of our understanding of the Garbage Patch:

MOST OF THE WORKERS OF THE GARBAGE PATCH ARE VOLUNTEERS - WOULD YOU VOLUNTEER YOUR TIME TO HELP CLEAN UP THE EARTH? IS IT WORTH IT? WHAT WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO DO TO HELP FIX WHAT HUMANS HAVE DONE TO THE EARTH?

Deforestation of Haiti

The photo below is a satellite image of the island that has both countries Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Haiti has deforested 98% of all timber in their country. Haiti uses the timber for coal for energy use. It is the worst case of deforestation in the world. The border between Haiti and the DR is clearly visible indicated by the areas of vegetation on the DR side of the border. The government in the Dominican Republic has regulated deforestation for decades. The DR uses propane as its major fuel source. You can see how much of a difference government intervention makes when dealing with environmental issues. How can Haiti meet the energy needs of an impoverished country and still deal with environmental issues?

Mouth of Hell

This is a subduction zone is found between the Caribbean and the Cocos Plate. When colliding, one plate is less dense than the other and will be pushed underneath the other. Where the two plates collide, a large gap is left which is called a trench. Some trenches are famous. Can you name them?

Landslides

There are 3 basic types of mass movements: a creep, a flow, and a slide. These are videos of the fastest - a slide. Even though it doesn't seem to be moving fast, it can effectively relocate your house in a matter of seconds. The first one is fairly small and the one from Italy is on a much larger scale. The Italy landslide happened in February 2010.

Oil Leak in the Gulf of Mexico

These are satellite pictures of the Gulf of Mexico on April 25, 2010 and June 26, 2010. The amount of oil that has leaked into the Gulf at this point is unbelievable. Oil has been leaking for over 2 months and there doesn't seem to be a solution yet on how to stop it. You can view more images of the oil leak at the NASA website listed below.
