Crashing Galaxies

This simulation is what scientists believe will happen when 2 galaxies collide. The simulation was created by using images provided by the Hubble Telescope and a little imagination. The Simulation details what scientists believe will happen then stop the animation and show actual photos that demonstrate the galaxies in that portion of the simulation and thereby support the theory.

  1. I think this was a good way of showing how galaxies collide. This gave a good idea of how galaxies collide. it was also a very good idea to put pictures from the Hubble telescope at each stage, so it gave you an idea of what the colliding of the galaxies would actually look like.

  2. This was very interesting, how they first collide and then form a shape such as an "S" and then collide again. Why do the galaxies move back after they collide? Does it serve as some kind of recoil?

  3. Cool! It was interesting to see the galaxies collide and keep changing shape. My favorite part was when they formed an "S".

  4. Wow! I never knew that the sight of a galaxy colliding with another could be so breathtaking. I also like the way they pause the simulation to back up their video with photos.

  5. Did these two galaxies crashing together get destroyed or did they form something else? Do these galaxies move around in space? Its very interesting how these galaxies crashed and it seems that after they crashed it formed into different shapes and then became almost nothing!

  6. I like how the simulation includes incorporates real photographs of the different phases of the two galaxies colliding. It takes the simulation from being a vague theory to a well supported one, to me.

  7. I found this video very interesting. I really liked how they stopped the simulation every once in a while so you could see the phase. It was also very cool that they used actual photographs from the Hubble Telescope. I'm a little confused about how they got the photographs though if this hasn't happened yet. I also found it very interesting how the galaxies collided and in what position and the changes that were happening.

  8. What I saw happen was that two separate galaxies collided, and the centers of each galaxy slowly came together and merged into one center. I also noticed that the arms of each galaxy where flinging off to the sides in a squiggly line as the galaxies slowly merged together. I liked how at certain points in the video, they actually show real pictures taken with the Hubble telescope to accompany the animation.

  9. I think this animation really gives the indication that a galaxy really truly becomes a powerhouse, giant galaxy when it collides with another

  10. After watching this video, I was actually quite surprised. The reason being is that galaxies colliding is obviously not a good thing, so I expected there to be some sort of explosion. It turns out that's not the case. Instead, it creates a S like form (from the angle shown in the video).

  11. This video was interesting because it showed a theory of what scientists think will happen in the future. What the scientists think will happen is that our galaxy will collide with another galaxy and form another huge galaxy.

  12. I think this video was a really cool way of demonstrating two galaxies colliding. I like how the showed actual pictures to prove their theory of how it would look when they collide. Also, it's really interesting how when the two spiral galaxies come together it doesn't make another, bigger spiral galaxy. My favorite thing about this video is the way they show what it would look like from different angles such as if you were looking up to help give a better visual of the galaxies colliding.

  13. It was pretty interesting to see what some scientist think what will happen when two galaxies collide. It must have taken a long time of research to create this theory. I thought it was kind of confusing. I wasn't sure how/why scientist came up with it. I didn't understand it that well. If my name comes up as sportsboss555, then this is Owen Lombardi.

  14. I thought that the galaxies combined and formed a spiral, or eliptical galaxy. I never knew that the galaxies formed a strange shaping irregular galaxy. I also had no idea how slow it went, I thought it was fast and quick. When the two galaxies combine, do they destroy much of whats in each one, or do they slowly merge, and things just change orbits, I couldn't tell.

  15. This video is a great guide to understanding how galaxies crash. The way that they stopped the video to further show us how they crashed was very nice. By seeing how the galaxies collided in different angles, it helped me understand more. Also, the galaxies were shown in many different pictures such as when they're surrounded by stars, when they are just dark circles, etc. I thought that this video was awesome!

  16. This video was a little confusing because the video kept switching between animation and real images, so it was kind of hard to follow along. When I imagined two galaxies colliding, I always thought of it as being a giant collision that would be so powerful it vaporizes anything nearby. Or I always thought that if there's a black hole in the center of all galaxies, the black holes of each galaxy would be so strong that they would actually suck each other up. But in the video it looked like the two galaxies were morphing in to a shape that looked like a barred galaxy.

  17. I was always curious as to what would happen when two galaxies collided, and this video answered my questions. I always knew most neighbor galaxies would merge eventually, but I was always expecting some kind of explosion or significant change. This animation helped me understand what happens exactly when two galaxies come together, although I still am wondering if different shaped galaxies produce different outcomes. For example, if two spiral galaxies merge, will it come out looking different or the similar as two different spiral galaxies, or another shaped galaxy?
Although this video was done in animation, I did think it was very interesting. It helped me see visually how two galaxies take on many different forms and are each unique, none the same.

  18. I found the video to be very interesting and cool. The way the two galaxies spun around each other and combined was very interesting. I also noticed that the original arms of the two galaxies weren't visible during the collision and the arms seem to have combined.

  19. This assures what I saw in the previous video is that when two galaxies collide the apparent form changes drastically sort of when two cars crash each other from different angles.

  20. I thought that this video was good because it further strengthened my confidence on this topic. I liked how this video showed how 2 galaxies collide using the simulation and the really photos and I thought that was really cool.

  21. Through this video I learned that when two galaxies collide, it looks like the bigger galaxy absorbs the other one

    ReplyDelete
  22. The video showed what would happen if two galaxies collided. I thought it was interesting how for the galaxy to absorb the other galaxy it had to turn horizontally. In that picture, it really looked like one galaxy was inside the other.

  23. This video really amazed me. It reminded me of smoke in the night. I thought the idea was creative by showing the simulation, then matching it up to real photos. I noticed that the two galaxies were on angle to each other while colliding. At one point, the 'arms' got really thin making the center very prominent. This video helped me understand, visually, the colliding of two galaxies.

  24. I thought that it was very interesting. It was really cool how it showed the two galaxies colliding, and in each phase. I thought it did a really good job on showing how they combined, and what they turned into. Was it supposed to be silent?

  25. I thought it was really cool. Especially the lines curved and moving that looked like tails. I was surprised how thin the galaxies looked and why were they spinning?

  26. Woah, I cant believe that when the galaxies just collide in to each other like a sawmill on a plank of wood. Kinda weird of how the galaxies also releases gas or something during the crash. Cool.

I thought that the simulation was really cool. The galaxies did not collide as I thought galaxies collided. I did not expect the galaxies to create and S shape. I thought that one galaxy would collide with another galaxy horizontally and make a giant galaxy. I liked how they showed a simulation and then real images. I am wondering if all galaxies collide this way or if every galaxy collides differently.

  28. I thought that 90% of the matter was in the outer parts of the galaxy. How come the centers are most attracted to one another?

  29. Who knew what would happen when galaxies collide? I didn't. When galaxies collide they come together to form one big spiral galaxy. Scientists have actual evidence which led them to believe that this is what happens when and if they collide.

  30. Based on imagination and the Hubble telescope, scientists believe that when two galaxies form they are creating shapes. By working together they are forming bigger galaxy.

  31. When they collide, they look like they form a lollipop. It would be pretty cool to have a lollipop shaped galaxy. Then at around the 0:40 mark it looks like a bird thing, which is cool too. Then it sort of looks like they turn into a sort of spiral looking galaxy thing.

    ReplyDelete
  32. So before they collide, one's flat and ones on it's side? After they take the stars and the little details away, at 0:14 the 2 galaxies look like a lollipop. Both of them movie into each other, but if they are merging, why does it look like one galaxy is going completely through it? It's weird how both sort of unravel and then start combining for real. What are the white dots where the galaxies start to connect, at 0:57? I still don't understand why nothing got destroyed, usually everything explodes if something changes.

  33. I like how it shows the 2 galaxies forming then slowley surrounding each other before it creates a s like shape. I also like how it shows over time what happens to the S like shape ( the galaxies crashing).

  34. I think this video has been my favorite out of all the four videos I saw. I thought it was SO cool how in the beginning the galaxies got bigger. Then, they started moving together. Next, they collided with each other. I think my favorite part of the video was at the end when the galaxies were making cool shapes and were they would get brighter and dimmer.

  35. The two galaxies created a normal spiral galaxy after they collided although, the two galaxies started off as elliptical galaxies.

I thought this stimulation was really cool and it showed how galaxies collide step by step in a short and sweet way. But why cant the galaxies just go on top of each other or just mix in with each other instead of like going half through each other and then splitting into arms? Why does that happen? And also, do collided galaxies always end up looking that way(how it was at the end of the video)?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Colliding galaxies are interesting. As they combine, at first they stay in their shapes, but just together. Then they start to change shape and form to each other. It seems like a lot of matter within the galaxies is lost.

  38. Its really stunning how Scientist (Modeling Computational Scientists!!!!) can make these videos by looking at images and kind of tieing them together in a way that seems extremly real. I also like when theories are REALLY backed up by science and physical photgraohs. Really, theres no way that you can say "THATS SOOO NOT WHAT HAPPEND! I'LL TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED!" becasue these theories are so well tested and backed up. I think thats really cool

    ReplyDelete
  39. That was so cool. You were able to see them colliding in an animation and the in real life! I originally thought that galaxies just stayed in one place or moved farther away from each other because the Universe is expanding. I never knew that they actually collided and turned in to one galaxy.

  40. I think that it is amazing how scientists can predict what two colliding galaxies would look like, only by using their observations and the images sent to them by the Hubble telescope. It is very interesting seeing how their ideas match up and are supported by these images.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The two spiral galaxies seem to lose their form as they combine to form an irregular galaxy. Their centers of gravity also seem to shrink as they collide and the gas around them dissipates.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Throughout the whole video, I was wondering why the galaxies were turning different ways so much and not just combining into the same thing. In the end, I realized that they formed a different type of galaxy (i think an irregular galaxy) which is interesting that two galaxies combined to form a different type of one, I didn't think that would happen.

  43. I find it interesting how they cross each other then become a bit elliptical. Then it turns into like an S. Then they collide like in the middle of the "S" and the rest just looks like gas.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I found this video to be a little confusing, due to the fact that they froze it almost every second. It says in the blurb at the top that when they freeze it they're showing you actual photos, but it really just makes it confusing on what is exactly happening. Although it was confusing, it was also very educational and interesting to watch what scientists believe will happen when two galaxies collide.

  45. Two galaxies are colliding and coming together. It looks like after they collide they become smaller.

  46. I think it is so cool how we have the technology to see into space and make such accurate predictions. It is amazing that scientists predicted exactly how the two galaxies were going to merge together. It is interesting how the galaxies do not just mush together, but they form different shapes before they actually come together as one. For example, it looks like the galaxies are almost done crashing, but then they go away from each other again and form an "s" shape.

I also thought it was interesting that they showed real pictures of galaxies colliding, it helps support what the scientists think would happen if galaxies collided.

  48. How do galaxies move close enough to collide?

    ReplyDelete
  49. This was so interesting! I noticed how a little while after the galaxies collided, their center of masses combined into one. Now, there are just two spiral arms around the one big center of mass. This is so cool to me because it is amazing how that big of something can just collide with another thing, and they will combine to form one. What about everything inside each galaxy? what will happen to that?

  50. It looked cool when it became one. it kind of looked like a lollipop from the side. OMG two spiral galaxies became one huge one. This was a cool video. It helped me understand how two galaxies crash together

  51. One galaxy seems to be engulfing the other one, instead of one or both of them exploding. I am guessing this is because galaxies are mostly made of gas. The planets that are in the galaxies might collide and explode.

  52. It was cool to see the galaxies colliding in 3-D. In the other video, we had seen the galaxies from the top (or birds-eye view), so they looked 2-D. In the beginning, however, I got confused with how the
disks were merging, since one of the galaxies you can see from the top, and the other on its side
