The Creation and Collision of Galaxies

Watch the video below to see a simulation of the creation of a galaxy. Note the counterclockwise spinning and the gravity that is pulling material towards it. As the galaxy continues to get larger, it absorbs a smaller galaxy and becomes even bigger.

  1. This was a very informative video. It really showed you how the center of the galaxy collects material from the surrounding area and combines with other galaxies to become fully-formed. The video also shows you how the galaxy rotates counter-clockwise.

  2. Wow! This animation was really cool! It reminds me of a hurricane; there is a center point that rotates very quickly and everything that comes in its path is sucked in. It is amazing how this effect is like a chain reaction; when a smaller galaxy gets sucked in, the larger galaxy gets more powerful and sucks more galaxies into it.

  3. It's so interesting to watch the creation of a galaxy. The visuals are so phenomenally interesting, and fascinating. To see all of these things coming together to create something so huge, which will get even huger over time. However, I don't understand what the material that is being pulled towards the galaxy is.

  4. Wow! This was a very interesting video! The galaxy was spinning and collecting stuff and then all of these other things were colliding and it would absorb them and become bigger.

  5. I find it so interesting how fascinating things like this occur up in space to create such a complex thing like a galaxy. Its amazing how big it gets and the way that it collects material and even absorbs a smaller galaxy!

  6. I think it is really interesting to see this simulation because of how little footage/time-lapases are recorded in astronomy. Most of the time, you only see pictures of the universe around us, so seeing how a celestial body evolves is very interesting.

  7. This video that simulated the creation of a galaxy was super duper interesting. It was very cool the way everything started by slowly pulling towards the middle and then as time goes by it started to pull in quicker and everything revolved around the center. I also found it interesting the way everything surrounding the galaxy would sort of join the spinning galaxy.

  8. I don't know if there was supposed to be any sound to this video, but I definitely saw that as more and more galaxies were sucked into the original galaxy, it got bigger and bigger. The galaxies kept merging together and adding more and more stars to the counter clockwise twirl.

  9. I think unlike the animation, thios video really explains and details these 2 processes of a galaxies "life".

  10. I thought the entire process was quite interesting. It is really cool how you can see just how strong the center's gravitational pull is because everything around it is being drawn closer to where the center is. With all that stuff, everything thing starts to rotate/spin and you can see the galaxy forming by is current elliptical shape.

  11. Wow, this is so fascinating and interesting. It intrigues me how there are little mini-galaxies that collide and create on bigger galaxy. This video also explains how the orbit gets shaped. At first, the orbit is unstable, then, it stabilizes.

  12. I thought that this video was very interesting while showing an, what seems to be, accurate, visual representation of how a spiral galaxy is formed. I also thought it was interesting how the video was speed up and it showed at the bottom how many thousands of years it was actually taking.

  13. Wow! This is so fascinating! As I was watching the video, I thought that it was very cool. The two galaxies were coming together and mending into one. It was just like a tornado, where the tornado pulls everything in to become larger. In the beginning, the galaxy was very tiny but after mending with about 3 or 4 other galaxies, it became very large! I thought that this was very interesting!

  14. This is a very good animation. I really see how it works now. i was sort of understanding it, but this video really makes it clear. So basically as the galaxy spins, more stuff gets brought into it, such as other galaxies. I wonder what the scale model between the biggest star and the bigest found galaxy would be. Just a thought I thought while watching.

  15. I like how in the video they show the gravity pulling stuff towards it. Also, the spinning looks really cool and it helped me understand why a spiral galaxy looks the way it is. Furthermore, when the galaxies collide to form one big galaxy, it looks really awesome the way they pull towards each other. The visual was really good and I liked this video a lot because it looks really cool and because it helped me to understand galaxy formation a lot better.

  16. This video really gave me a complete visual and understanding about the formation of galaxies. At first I wasn't really sure what I was looking at to be honest, but then I realized that this was the dust that was spinning and condensing to form the beginnings of a galaxy with the nucleus at the center. It seemed that the forming galaxy kept colliding with other galaxies, which made it bigger. The galaxy and the way they swirl remind me of the way hurricanes move and form.

  17. The video was very interesting. I learned that galaxies spin counterclockwise when they combine and form new galaxies. I also think that the way the material of the second galaxy got absorbed by the first galaxy was really cool. The video gave me a better understanding of how galaxies form.

  18. The video starts out with the solar nebula, which is a huge cloud of dust. When the solar nebula collapsed, it formed galaxies. In this video, it showed two galaxies combining to form one galaxy, or one galaxy having the better gravitational pull to swallow up the other galaxy. Because of its gravitational pull, the galaxy attracts a huge amount of debri to make it bigger and bigger. That's what the video was illustrating.

  19. Really cool video. It shows how galaxies form and become bigger. It helped me in that it showed how galaxies over time become bigger and merge. These merges can change the appearance of the galaxy at a certain point as well.

  20. I thought that this video was very interesting and I felt it demonstrated the creation of a galaxy.I especially like how when 2 galaxies were about to combine the sped up and rotated quickly around each other.

  22. I thought this video was very interesting, I have never seen anything like that. I noticed that in the beginning it looked like flour that you put in front of a fan and it flew around. Then at a certain time, there were two points. One was bigger than the other, while the smaller one was getting swallowed up. Then there was a bunch of outside 'junk' attracting to the colliding galaxy, making it bigger. Finally, it was a big galaxy spinning counter clockwise on an angle.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Unlike the first video, this video looked more realistic and detailed. At first, it was hard to distinguish between the galaxies, but as I watched it again it started to make sense to me. In the beginning, when a galaxy is first created, a bunch of matter and space material comes together, with a concentrated center. As the two galaxies merge, the large one tends to absorb the smaller one, absorbing its matter, stars, solar systems, etc. Once the two galaxies have collided, the come together to form an extremely large galaxy with a single concentrated center.
This video has helped me understand the creation and collision of galaxies, visually.

I thought that it was really cool to see galaxies form over a short period of time when in actuallity they form over millions of years. The concept that galaxies are formed by gas is more clear to me now because I have visualized it. I think that it is really interesting that galaxies are formd by gas. It is hard to believe that what we are learning about in the topic of Astronomy actually exists.

  30. In this video the green light spinning in the substances that gravity is pulling. Since the galaxy is taking in smaller galaxies it is increasing in size. At the end of the video there is a big galaxy that formed.

  31. I'm going to write a comment anyway, but is there supposed to be sound? There is none on mine. It's so cool how the numbers in the right bottom corner are moving so fast. It looks like it's spinning kind of slowly, and then you look in the corner and you're like whoa! The center doesn't look as if it's staying in one place it's kind of spinning around itself, like a dog trying to teach it's tail who's boss. The way everything get's pulled is so weird, at one point I saw something go in and come back out. Everything starts to happen faster when the smaller galaxy came into view, it looked like the smaller one was trying to get away but then got swallowed up, the smaller one didn't even effect the spinning of the larger one.

  32. It looks like a lot of green dust is spinning around and circling around a certain point. It looks like a fan sort of that gets faster and faster. It's really interesting. And the fan gradually collects more and more material and gets bigger.

  33. I like how the clouds are forming together and creating a galaxy. It looks really. I also like how the two small galaxies crossed each other to create one. I can tell that the galaxy is collecting lots of different particles in space.

  34. I like how the small galaxies where coming together as one. I thought that when the big galaxy was sucking all the materials that were surrounding it was really cool. It was so interesting to watch and I enjoyed the part where 2 galaxies where passing each other, but not merging and how at the end it ends up merging together.

  37. Its really amazing how the universe does all of this stuff by its self. Its difficult to believe that we are currently in a galaxy spinning (Counter clockwise like most things in the Universe!) like that and we (humans, and birds, and monkeys, and rabbits, etc, etc) are just totally oblivious to whats going on. We dont feel the spinning. We cant see the various items being sucked into our galaxy and becoming part of us. Ughhhh the universe is so cool its unbearable.

  38. This video was fascinating. You could see how a galaxy started; by gas clouds and dust combining together, centered by a body of mass. As other galaxies are passing, they slow down, and start spinning around the other galaxy. As the galaxiy continues to spin, it picks up more and more gas and dust, crating more mass.

I learned that a galaxy is made by it's counter clockwise rotation and gravity pulling in dust and space stuff. I also noticed it collided with another small galaxy. But in the other video assigned for this same hw, it showed how a galaxy collides with another galaxy but in that video, the galaxy had arm like figures but nothing like how this forming galaxy swallowed/ absorbed the smaller galaxy.

  40. That is amazing! I wonder how long it took for the galaxies to crash into each other. The galaxy just became bigger, and BIGGER! I'm astounded, that video was really breathtaking. I didn't know that galaxies moved around the Universe.

  41. I think that it is very interesting how the galaxy is being made from basically nothing. It just begins by absorbing different materials in space in order to create a small galaxy. I also found it amazing how it even absorbed another, smaller galaxy to help make that one galaxy larger.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It is noteworthy how gasses and matter start to form around a single body of mass. Once the galaxy gets big enough, its gravity can pull smaller galaxies into it. The galaxies also seem to bounce off of each other before merging.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think its very interesting how you can almost see the gravity working, especially when the galaxies combine. You can really see it pulling everything together. Also, I think this is a spiral galaxy and I like that you are able to watch that happen, and see how that forms.

  44. It was amazing to see how a process that takes millions and billions of years is sped up before your very eyes. Although we have read about this in the textbook, I have never seen this happen in motion. You can really see where the disk and black hole are located, and how glalaxies are formed.

  45. This video was very interesting. The visual of it really helped show how the collisions worked. I found, that the video would be better if it had narration. I found it very interesting, how the galaxy would brush past another, and then absorb it to become larger.

  46. I like how one galaxy absorbs the other. The are like suddenly attached to each other when they're close. They form like a line then they start spinning more and more until a bigger galaxy is made.

  47. Spinning to create a galaxy. Increases speed. Forces are pulling things closer. The galaxy gets larger and spins faster and faster.

  48. I think this is a really helpful video. It does a good job of showing how galaxies are formed. I never knew that a galaxy kept getting larger over a long period of time. I also think it's cool how the whole time the galaxy was spinning in the same direction. Also, it is interesting how the galaxy so easily absorbed the smaller galaxy.

  50. One part that i liked in particular of this video was in 0:30 where two galaxies that were equal in size merged together to create a messy and huge ball. The cool thing was that the "ball" flattened out into a disc, which looked a lot like a spinning pinwheel. Also, I loved how in the end, the huge galaxy was very easily attracting a bunch of stars as though it were a super strong magnet. While I was watching the video, though, I wondered if the Milky Way spun as fast as the other galaxies shown in the video because the acceleration that was shown looked really fast and out of control.

  51. Somehow, this reminds me of dry ice crashing together. I remember going into a science museum and watching a demonstration. This machine made dry ice, and transported the ice along a tiny conveyor belt. this ice fell into a pool of something dark blue, I don't quite remember what the substance was. The ice rocketed around, trailing little swirls, much like how one of the galaxies just swoops down the screen trailing stuff behind it. When the two galaxies collide, their centers bounce along each other, then come back again and spin as they do it. This is much like how the ice bound together once they crashed into other bits of ice; the ice would go along till it crashed into something, then spin wildly together until they bound together into one.

  55. I think that it was so cool watching a simulation and creation of a galaxy. I think that I was more interested in watching the galaxy getting larger and spinning until it swallowed another galaxy and got larger. From 1:00, I started to notice that as the galaxy spun, it swallowed not only a galaxy, but other materials from outer space. It was pulling everything towards it.

  56. The galaxy seems to be spinning faster as it gets bigger. That could be because its own size is the force in making it spin fast. Also, the more galaxies it absorbed, the bigger it gets, and then the bigger it gets, the more galaxies it can absorb.

This video was pretty cool. It reminds me of that magic trick when you combine two closed metal circles and then they magically combine. They crash at a perpendicular angle, like two flying saucers. In this process of the collision, it almost look like they turn into barred spirals with two arms, before disappearing into a white whole.

Watching this was so cool. You can see a smaller galaxy being consumed by a larger galaxy, making the galaxy even bigger. As the galaxy forms, it's gravity continues to drag stars and dust towards it. As it keeps spinning the galaxy gets larger and larger in size. It is nice to actually see and have some sense of how our own galaxy was potentially created.

This is an amazing representation of multiple galaxies forming to make one HUGE spiraling galaxy. The galaxies appeared to be very small at first, but if two came close to each other, a force would pull them together faster and faster until they became one bigger galaxy. Even after galaxies combined, the product never stopped spinning and became bigger, and I don't think it will stop increasing in size for some time. Very interesting video.

This is a very interesting model of two galaxies colliding, and I never thought that the galaxies would collide in such an elegant and mathematical way, all while continuing to spin, and grow larger. this is the most interesting thing, that they never really stop spinning, even when they are under the influence of each other's gravity, or colliding. very cool.
